What Time Can You Buy Alcohol in California?

In the Golden State, the official hours for purchasing alcohol are as follows:

  • On-Premises Establishments (Bars, Restaurants, etc.): You can buy alcohol from 6:00 AM to 2:00 AM the following day. However, keep in mind that cities and counties may impose additional restrictions.
  • Off-Premises Locations (Liquor Stores, Supermarkets): The same time frame applies—6:00 AM to 2:00 AM.

Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) Training with Ace Food Handler

Understanding RBS Training

The Responsible Beverage Service Training Program was established by Assembly Bill 1221 in 2017. Its goal is to educate servers and managers of alcoholic beverages about the risks associated with serving alcohol to minors and over-serving patrons. By doing so, it aims to reduce alcohol-related harm in local communities.

Who Must Be Trained Under AB 1221?

Starting from July 2021, any ABC licensee with an “ABC On-Premises License” must ensure that their staff (including alcohol servers and managers) undergo RBS training within sixty (60) days of employment. This requirement applies to various establishments, such as:

  • Restaurants
  • Bars
  • Fast casual dining spots
  • Tasting rooms (including off-sale locations)
  • Hotels
  • Stadiums

An “ABC On-Premises License” allows the service of alcoholic drinks to patrons who consume them within the licensed premises.

How to Get RBS Certified
