TABC on the Fly tips to Detecting a fake ID
Detecting a fake ID can be challenging, but there are several common signs to look out for:
- Inconsistent Fonts: Varied font types, sizes, or alignment can indicate forgery. Authentic IDs use specific fonts that are difficult to replicate.
- Photo Quality: Poor quality, blurry, or pixelated images are red flags. The photo should be clear and match the physical appearance of the person presenting the ID.
- Material Quality: Authentic IDs are made from high-quality materials. Fake IDs might feel lighter, flimsier, or have rough edges compared to genuine ones.
- Microprint: Many states use microprint as a security feature. Under magnification, this should be clear and legible. If it appears smudged or unclear, it could be a fake.
- Ultraviolet Features: Some IDs have features that are only visible under UV light. For example, in California, a second, lighter image of the cardholder appears under UV light.
- Holograms and Watermarks: Check for holograms and watermarks that are difficult to replicate. These should be clear and not appear as stickers or overlays.
- Expiration Dates: Unrealistic or incorrect expiration dates can be a red flag. Always verify that the dates make sense and match the issuing state’s format.
- Peeling Lamination: Fake IDs often have tampered lamination that can be peeled back easily. Authentic IDs should have smooth, intact lamination.
- Feel the Card: Run your thumb over the card. It should not feel bumpy or have raised areas, especially over the photo or text.
By being vigilant and familiarizing yourself with these signs, you can better identify fake IDs and ensure compliance with legal requirements. Always take the time to examine IDs closely, especially those from out-of-state, as you may be less familiar with their features.
