Lost Your Texas Food Handler Card? Why You Can’t Look It Up (And How to Fix It)
If you are a server, cook, or bartender in Texas, you know the panic: An inspector walks into the kitchen, or your manager asks for your “papers,” and you realize you have no idea where your certificate is.
You head to Google to find the “Texas Food Handler Database,” only to find… nothing.
Here is the cold, hard truth about the “Texas Certificate Trap” and exactly how to get back to work in minutes.
The DSHS Reality: There is No State Database
Unlike many other states, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) does not maintain a central database of Food Handler certificates.
In Texas, the responsibility for keeping records falls entirely on:
-
The Training Provider (The company you paid for the course).
-
You (The employee).
If you don’t remember which website you used to take your $7.00 course two years ago, the state cannot help you find it. There is no portal to type in your Social Security number and download your card.
The Exception: TABC Certificate Lookup
Now, if you are looking for your TABC Seller-Server License, you are in luck. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission does maintain a database.
-
How to find a lost TABC Card: Visit the TABC Certificate Inquiry page. You will need your SSN and Date of Birth.
But what if it’s your Food Handler Card that’s missing?
3 Steps to Finding Your Lost Food Handler Card
If you didn’t get your certificate from ACE Food Handler (where we offer Unlimited Free Reprints), here is how to track it down:
-
Search Your Email Inbox: Search for keywords like “Certificate,” “Food Handler,” “Order Confirmed,” or “Permit.” Most providers send a PDF copy the moment you pass.
-
Check Your Bank Statement: Look back at your transactions. Most courses cost between $7 and $15. The name on the charge will usually lead you to the provider’s website.
-
Check with Your Previous Manager: If you’ve changed jobs recently, your old employer was required by law to keep a copy on file. They may still have it in your personnel folder.
The “Instant Fix”: Don’t Waste Hours Hunting
If you’ve spent more than 15 minutes searching and still can’t find your card, you are losing money. Instead of stressing out, most Texas workers choose the Instant Fix.
At ACE Food Handler, we’ve made the process as painless as possible:
-
Cost: Only $7.00 (The most affordable in Texas).
-
Time: 30-minute course (Skip the fluff).
