When working at a bar, you need to prevent your customers from becoming intoxicated. Whether they indulge in a road accident or fight with other customers, you can be held responsible under certain circumstances. Therefore, it is essential to keep an eye on your customers and refrain from over-serving drinks. You must be able to differentiate a sober customer from intoxicated one.

Let’s take a look at the symptoms of intoxication so that you can identify a drunken person in your bar.

1.     Excessive Fatigue

An intoxicated person is likely to get tired easily. They need to sit down and may fall asleep anywhere. If any patron is found sleeping in bar, there is a high probability that they’ve become intoxicated. Intoxication also causes inflammation in eyes. Pay attention to your customers to stay safe from any legal issues.

2.     Communication Issues

An intoxicated person usually finds it difficult to communicate with others. If the customer doesn’t pay attention to what you’re saying, or doesn’t show any reaction to unusual events, then they are likely to be drunk. Drunken customers also tend to repeat themselves multiple times, due to lack of coordination. Do not ignore your customers if they seem to repeat their stories multiple times.

3.     Loss of Balance

When trying to identify an intoxicated person, lack of balance is the key indication. If a customer is unable to stand straight or stumbles while walking, they may have consumed a high amount of alcohol. Refrain from serving them more alcohol and offer them water or coffee to get rid of symptoms of intoxication.

Intoxicated customers tend to forget basic mathematics. They may struggle to count the change when paying for their drinks.

4.     Mood Swings

If a person shows signs of extreme mood swings, keep an eye on them. Their behavior may easily shift from aggressive to overfriendly. Look out for such customers, since they may annoy others or indulge in fights.

5.     Strong Odor

Lingering smell of alcohol is the clear indication of intoxication. You can identify a drunken person by the smell coming from their clothes or breathe. Since it is quite a task to identify an intoxicated person by the smell of alcohol in a bar environment, you should look for other signs too.

6.     Change in Behavior

If a person seems to be overgenerous or shows extreme behavior, do not serve more drinks unless you’re sure they aren’t drunk. Intoxicated customers tend to become generous and may order free drinks for strangers. They may not be able to pay for drinks later. Therefore, look out for your customers and ask them whether they can afford to pay for so many drinks.
