Think Globally, Drink Locally
As the global economy was developing, there was excitement in being able to enjoy wine from New Zealand or draught beer straight from Ireland. But today, there has overwhelmingly been a shift back toward local products. Guests find a lot more value today in supporting local business and generally perceive local product to be of higher quality.

If your bar is not taking advantage of a local selection of beer, wine, and spirits, you are missing the boat. Whether your guests are locals or travelers, they will appreciate having local selections on the menu. Local selections in both food and beverage can add higher perceived value and quality. Simply, today’s guests will be willing to pay more for local selections or items with local ingredients.
“What Do You Have That’s Local?”
Business travelers will often ask for craft beer selections that are local. This question is often one of the first questions I see these guests asking when they sit down at the bar. Even if your bar is not putting a high focus on craft beer selections, it is important to have at least one or two local beer selections to offer guests who ask this.

Getting Started
I recommend putting local items at the forefront and highlighting them, but you can start with something as simple as a few bottle selections available for guests who ask. Ask your beer or wine distributors what some of the highest selling local selections are and they should be able to get you started with a few cases and some custom marketing materials.
Craft Cocktails
Craft cocktails and local distilleries are becoming very on-trend. Reach out and see if there are any local distilleries in your area. You could build a few featured cocktails to showcase some local spirits. I’ve had great success using local-themed names for these cocktails. Put up some marketing, blast them on social media, and get your staff talking about them. They will sell.
Local guests love to have that community connection when they go out. Traveling guests love to experience tastes of local fare from the areas that they visit. You will see your sales and profits rise if you put a higher emphasis on local products at your bar.
