Now that you got your new job as a bartender, manager, or waitress, the hard part is over! First, however, you will need to be on top of a few minor bookkeeping things to make sure you are ready to go. These things include making sure you are licensed to serve alcohol by completing RBS Training and getting a California food handlers card if needed.
California laws state that all those who handle food need a ca food handlers card, and all those who serve alcohol will need RBS training. However, it is still essential to ask your employer if you need these certifications to work since different counties may have slightly different requirements.
What is RBS Training?
An RBS Training Program (Responsible Beverage Service) is an ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control) approved course that staff can take before serving alcohol. The course will educate those who serve alcohol about the alcohol service laws and train servers on how to slow down alcohol and refuse service when necessary. The dangers of serving alcohol to minors or over-serving alcohol to customers will be stressed. The RBS training courses are designed to prepare alcohol servers to feel comfortable entering the workforce. The mandate of RBS ensures standardization of training among all alcohol serving employees.
What is the CA Assembly Bill 1221
The CA Assembly Bill 1221 made it mandatory for all servers and managers of alcoholic beverages to get trained in the Responsible Beverage Service Training Program (RBSTP). This is to create more awareness of the dangers of alcohol and protect local communities by training servers. The CA Assembly Bill 1221, passed in 2017, will go into effect on July 1, 2022. Starting then, servers and managers will need a valid RBS certification from an ABC accredited program. This delayed requirement is due to the passing of Assembly Bill 82, which allowed extensions on the required training because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Who Needs RBS Training in California
RBS training in California is required by bartenders, waiters, and managers in charge of serving alcohol. In addition, those involved with serving alcohol will be
required to be RBS Certified within 60 days of being hired. The new mandate calls for an estimated 1,000,000 alcohol servers who need to be licensed.
