Everyone knows checking IDs is essential—and the risk if you forget. How can you ensure sure your team remains safe and in compliance?
In the world’s current climate of mandates and changing rules, hospitality industries across the globe are facing increased stress like never before. To say the stress of ever-expanding responsibilities can be exhausting is an understatement. However, the consequences of forgetting to uphold the duty of checking IDs can be devastating.

How to Check IDs Properly
1. Know the Date
The heat of a busy dinner rush occupies our focus. Ease the burden and post the date near an establishment’s entryway. Your local alcohol reps or distributors may also have an automated sign to offer.
2. Hold it In Your Hand
The ability to physically observe an ID up close is important. Holding IDs in your hand allows you to get a look at their picture, check the date, and feel for imperfections. If the ID remains in a wallet or other carrying case, the plastic cover will inhibit your ability to inspect it properly.
3. ABC’s FLAG System
California’s Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control (ABC) recommends a system called “FLAG:”
- Feel: Touch the ID and feel for abnormalities in its weight or texture.
- Look: Look out for any typos, strange fonts, mismatched date of birth, incorrect photos, and more. Observe any red flags that are markers of a fake ID.
- Ask: If your gut is telling you that an ID is fake, ask them a few identifying questions to confirm the information listed on the ID.
- Give Back: If the ID doesn’t pass your inspection, you can refuse service and either return the card or seize it, depending on your company’s policies.
