As in most service industries, restaurants face staffing challenges and share a common issue whether you are a small business or large chain. Restaurants can work to improve server retention and food server issues. All it takes are minor changes to the current process. Tips on Hiring

  • Review job descriptions. Many restaurants use generic job descriptions for food handlers and cooks. This is one of the most important items in a recruitment and selection process. Include items important to your brand or your business in the job descriptions. Make sure it is complete. Use portions of the job description in your ads to give applicants an indication of your expectations.
  • Do not just use ads to find candidates. Allow and reward for employee referrals.
  • Remain flexible with applicants when it comes to interview times. A dedicated cook, food server, or other restaurant staff struggle with getting off work to interview and an employee with integrity may not make up an excuse to an employer just to make an interview. Allow for off hour interviews.
  • Ask candidates their availability to work. A good manager will avoid scheduling restaurant staff for hours that conflict with their life responsibilities. Make sure it works for your business hours and current staff. If not, do not hire to have a body but to enhance the business.
  • Construct and implement an employee survey with questions that elicit employee attitudes about compensation, benefits, working conditions, training and development to gain an understanding of the workforce and its needs.
  • Train new and seasoned employees to aid in understanding restaurant expectations and customer service. Help to prepare food servers and other restaurant staff for future-roles or cross-train employees to assume responsibility in other areas.
  • Do not keep an employee on payroll if you know they are not a right fit for the team.
